What is Sedona known for? In addition to the natural beauty of its red rock formations, Sedona has become famous as a haven for spiritual well-being due to the many energy vortexes that many believe encompass the region. Here you can experience the unique whirlpools in the area.

  1. Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock is one of the most impressive things to see in Arizona and is by far the most photographed natural rock in Sedona. It is also one of the four major vortices known primarily to have “feminine” energy, which promotes feelings of compassion, calmness, and introspection. Its subtle energy can be felt from the first part of the trail, which tends to be strongest on the saddle—sometimes called Grandmother Rock.

The hike can be a bit difficult for novices, so a guide is recommended. Once there, you’ll be treated to some incredible views of Oak Creek and Red Rock State Park.

  1. Boynton Canyon

A spiritual center for the native Yavapai-Apache people, Boynton Canyon is often listed as one of the best hikes in Sedona, as it doesn’t require climbing to navigate or reach over difficult terrain. The primary vortex here lies between two rocks: “Kachina Woman” in the east and an unnamed red rock formation in the west.

If you’re feeling adventurous, enjoy the 6.1-mile out-and-back canyon route with its spectacular canyon walls and vegetation, while enjoying the peaceful energy that fills the surrounding area.

  1. Bell Rock

Bell Rock is one of the more prominent landmarks in the area, and the easy hike around the skirt of the cliff is one of our favorite things to do in Sedona. Once parked, there are several possible trail options, with the Bell Rock Trail and the Courthouse Butte Loop Trail being the most popular. The whirlpool here can be felt from the base of the cliff to the summit and is said to be more “masculine” in nature, helping to inspire stimulating thoughts and ideas.

  1. Airport Mesa Overlook

If you book your hotel in Sedona appropriately, make sure you visit one of the most popular places in Sedona, Arizona: Airport Mesa Overlook. This is a great place for a sunrise hike when the trail is less crowded. The overlook gives you a breathtaking view of the area and some people even report seeing colorful ornaments all around them as soon as they reach the vortex, which is said to bring a sense of rejuvenation and aid in creativity and inspiration.

What is so special about Sedona? Like most travel destinations, you get what you pay for with Sedona. Explore with a sense of openness and you may be amazed by what you discover. Red Rock State Park and Oak Creek Vista are just two more reasons Sedona was named one of the 21 Most Beautiful Southwest Cities. Think you’re ready for a trip? Clear your mind, grab your crystal, and book your flight to Sedona. It’s time to enjoy the wonders that Arizona has to offer.
