Amateur diver accidentally discovers flooded ancient city in Turkey

Amateur diver accidentally discovers flooded ancient city in Turkey: The tourist became the discoverer of the underwater harbor in the Dikili Bay in the Aegean Sea.

While on vacation, 39-year-old engineer Denem Orhun discovered unusual round columns underwater. He took several pictures and handed them over to archaeologists. A year and a half later, the Turkish authorities recognized its discovery – the underwater city received the status of a protected object.

The researchers suggest that the diver discovered the harbor of the ancient city of Atarnea. Polis was especially famous in the 4th century BC. e. when they were ruled by the tyrant Hermias, a student of Plato and a friend of Aristotle. In the 1st century BC e. the inhabitants of Attorney left the city for an unknown reason – possibly due to an outbreak of an epidemic.

This is far from the first news about the discoveries of amateur divers – just remember the 900-year-old crusader sword found off the coast of Israel in the fall of 2021.
