Pokémon Slowpoke has become a tourist symbol of Japan’s Kagawa Prefecture: The hero of memes decorated buses, ferries, and hotel rooms, symbolizing a leisurely vacation.
Slowpoke, a Pokémon with the appearance of a lizard-like hippopotamus and a reputation as a real brake, has been “working” for Kagawa Prefecture for several years now. Since 2015, he has been a symbol of the local postal service – apparently, it is not famous for its speed. Since 2018, he has been advertising noodles: the name of the Pokemon in Japanese Yadon is consonant with the word “udon”. And now the prefectural authorities have named Slowpoke as their official tourist mascot.
Now, between the main attractions of Kagawa, you can move “slowpoke style”: directly from the airport – on a bus with images of Pokemon, and further – on a themed ferry. Slowpoke rooms appeared in at least four hotels in Kagawa.
It is not surprising that the smallest prefecture in Japan has chosen Slowpoke as its hero – people come here first of all for the most famous noodles in the country and leisurely walks in nature.
