Berlin could become the world’s largest car-free city: 50 thousand Berliners signed a petition for the abolition of cars in the entire city center.
The social movement Autofrei Berlin demands to ban the entry of cars into the center of the capital. The restrictions will not affect only the disabled, rescue services, and delivery, all other citizens will have to limit themselves to 12 trips per year. Electric vehicles will also be banned.
There are several reasons for such radical demands: transport occupies more than half of the entire city space, pollutes the environment, causes accidents, and creates noise.
The signature collection process consists of three stages. The first has already ended – the campaign for Berlin without cars has already collected twice as many votes as it was required. If the city authorities do not pass the law by the end of February, activists will need to collect another 125,000 signatures. If even then the law is not adopted, the issue is submitted to a citywide referendum.
